In this video of an October 28, 2008, presentation, the Stanley Foundation’s David Shorr and Suzanne Nossel of the Center for American Progress, discuss “A Stake in the System: Redefining American Leadership.” The decline in the United States’ international standing and credibility is widely recognized and remarked. Less well understood, though, is the challenge of trying to renew US international leadership. Looking beyond the presidential election, Nossel and Shorr examine the “legitimacy agenda,” which includes a formidable set of human rights, security, economic, and environmental issues. They also share policy steps the next administration(s) must take to uphold international norms and a rules-based global order in a manner befitting the United States’ stake in that order. Their views are the result of a coauthored piece that is part of the Stanley Foundation’s new Powers and Principles project focused on 11 key powers in today’s world.
